Beer Batter Fish and Chips
You have try this fish and chips recipes. I think it only took me about 30 mins to make and came out so amazing even on the first shot. The recipe only has a few ingredients with the most important ones being fish and french fries. Besides those 2 ingredients the only thing left is the beer batter which includes 1 egg, a half cup of flour,garlic powder, and a cup of beer (I used an IPA but use whatever you have in the fridge)
The French Fries:
You have 2 options for the french fries: you can buy the frozen bag OR you can make your own. Personally, I prefer to make my own because they are so easy but I won’t judge you if you buy them 🙂
If you decide to by them, just follow the directions on the bag and you should be good to go with minimal effort.
If you decided to be a little adventurous and make your own, I solute you in your adventure. The first step is to get a large potato and cut it into ¼” to ½” square rods. Some people advice to soak them in water and do a few other things, but I never found that to be all that necessary.. From here all you have to do is put them in hot oil until they are golden brown on sides. Once you have them nice and golden brown, remove them from the oil and place onto a paper towel. IMMEDIATELY coat with salt and pepper.
If you need to keep these warm, you can put them on a baking sheet at ~300F
As written above, the beer batter is incredibly easy to make because there are only a few ingredients and you just have to mix them together. First you’ll want to grab a large mixing bowl that you’ll use to make the batter and dip the fish. Pour in the flour, the crack the egg, add the garlic powder, and finally the beer. Next you’ll want to mix thoroughly so that there are minimal lumps in the batter. The batter should seem like a thin pancake batter
Putting it together:
Conventionally Fish and Chips is usually made with Cod, but when I went to the store I couldn’t find any Cod wasn’t pre-battered. Because of this I had to settle on tilapia, but as long as you go with a white flaky fish you’ll enjoy it. I’ve even made this with flounder and and it came out very well!
No that you have your fish and your batter ready, dip the fish into the batter so that it is evenly coated. Now place it in the hot oil immediately and let fry until golden brown. Once the first side is nicely browned you can flip the fish to cook the other side. Repeat for remaining fish
Serve the Fish and Chips with Lemon,a side of Ketchup, and Tartar sauce (check out the tartar sauce recipe here). Enjoy!
|Fish and Chips
- .75lb fish filet
- 12oz beer
- 1 cup flour
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 1.5 lbs potato
- Salt pepper
- 1 pint frying oil
- Cut up potatoes into long strips that are about ¼” thick
- In a large frying pan place about an inch of oil and start heating
- Once hot, add the potatoes and occasionally flip until golden brown on all sides
- Remove the fries and immediately add salt and pepper
- In a medium mixing bowl, add flour, egg, garlic, and beer and whisk until smooth
- Using a paper towel, pat the fish to make sure that the outside is mostly dry
- Place the fish into the batter then quickly into the hot oil.
- Flip when golden brown and allow other side to turn golden brown
- Serve with ketchup and tartar sauce
